Science Week lesson plan: Bubble bang

Outdoors, demonstrate the ‘blasting' chemical reaction between bicarbonate of soda and vinegar.

Resources

  • Zip-lock sandwich bags (use good quality bags)
  • Vinegar
  • Bicarbonate of soda
  • Squares of tissue
  • Spoon
  • Cup

Show

  1. Lay a square of tissue on a surface.
  2. Put two spoonfuls of bicarbonate of soda in the centre of the tissue.
  3. Fold the edges of the tissue and twist the top gently to create a little parcel.
  4. Fill the cup with vinegar and pour into the zip-lock bag.
  5. Drop the parcel of bicarbonate of soda into the zip-lock bag and quickly seal the bag.
  6. Put it on the floor then stand well back.
  7. Observe what happens and get ready for a ‘bang!’

Explain

Vinegar (acetic acid) and bicarbonate of soda (sodium bicarbonate) react to produce bubbles of carbon dioxide gas. When the reaction is sealed inside a zip-lock bag it fills with the gas until it explodes.

Suggest

  • What would happen if you changed the amounts of vinegar or bicarbonate of soda?
  • Would it work with different liquids such as water or milk?
  • Does the material used to make the parcel make a difference to the reaction?
