The new common inspection framework from Ofsted places increased importance on fundamental British values (FBV). That they assess values through a school’s curriculum means that many are currently looking at how they promote both children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development and FBV.

One of the primary things that inspectors consider is how well leaders actively promote SMSC and FBV throughout learning and across the school. Ofsted want to see that a school’s ethos, culture and curriculum promotes FBV at every level. The values need to run through and be the foundation for everything a school does.

Introducing FBV to children

FBV can be a challenging concept to introduce to primary children. Many teachers are wary of saying and doing the wrong thing, especially when some of the issues involved can be complex and potentially sensitive.

To help get you started, we’ve put together a child-friendly, animated presentation that you can use as the basis of an assembly or with individual classes. The presentation gives children the opportunity to think carefully about the meaning of each value. They also get to reflect on ways the values can be promoted in your school.

Put SMSC and FBV at the heart of your school

If you need more help with FBV, the Cornerstones Curriculum is packed with content that helps schools make SMSC a key part of their own curriculum. With more than 80 Imaginative Learning Projects across a wide range of topics, the Curriculum has everything you need to support FBV in your school.

You can also introduce the Cornerstones Yoimoji, 58 colourful characters that combine to form a unique, engaging values and rewards system in your school. The Yoimoji are free for schools who use the Cornerstones Curriculum and just £150 for all other schools. You can find out more by watching the Yoimoji intro video.
