Diwali is a festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. As part of the celebrations places are decorated with lights, candles and colourful designs known as Rangoli patterns.
During Diwali, people usually create colourful Rangoli patterns on the floor outside their homes to welcome guests. To give the children an idea of what it is like to celebrate Diwali why not create your own Rangoli patterns outside in the school grounds?
Rangoli patterns activity
Ask the children to create their own Rangoli patterns for Diwali outside in the school grounds. They could choose to make simple geometric shapes or flower or petal shapes. Supply materials such as rice grains, flour, sand, chalk or even flowers and petals for the children to create their designs. Take photos of their designs before you tidy.
